Have you ever eaten weeds?

Yellow Dock

I suspect most of us haven’t eaten weeds. Dandelion greens are sometimes sold in grocery stores and can be used to make a nice salad. Yes, dandelions are the weeds most people poison in their yards. And, yes, they are those little yellow flowers we used to make necklaces out of as children. Weeds can be a wonderful source of vitamins and minerals, and the price can’t be any better. Anyone who says they are too poor to eat well should start eating dandelions! Several websites wrote that dandelion greens are only good in early spring and late fall, but I ate some raw in mid-August and they are yummy.

My new found interest in Portland has turned me on to a journalist who’s seriously committed to urban foraging. In fact, her blog is so much fun to read, you should stop reading this post and go subscribe to her twitter feed right now.
