I was thinking about plants in peoples’ yards as spring kind of starts here in Chicago. I walk around and bicycle around and see everyone’s bulbs coming up and flowers blooming a little, and I can’t help but think: How awesome would it be if more people were to grow food instead of flowers? I mean, flowers are great and all, but lettuce can be quite lovely, and a big purple head of cabbage is very beautiful. It’s just a daydream of mine to walk down the street in the summertime and see green beans sprouting through black iron fences… Our front yard is small and filled with mulch and bushes; our backyard is sod situated on top of some very unwelcoming dirt stuff, so maybe I’ll accidentally drop some of my bean sprouts in some dirt around town?
